Trend to Off -Site Destruction

Storage and Destruction Business Magazine (May 15, 2011)

A Preference for Off-Site Destruction

Instead of on-site, or mobile, destruction, more clients are requesting off-site destruction of their business information. The benefits associated with off-site destruction are that it's less expensive, safer for the environment and can be more secure.

Companies no longer have to assign one of their employees to stand outside to verify that the company's confidential material is shredded on-site. Noise and pollution are significantly reduced when companies opt for off-site shredding. And clients still receive a certificate of destruction and a sense of assurance through a closed-loop process.

Medical Records

NEW MANDATORY HIPAA FINES FOR IMPROPER DISPOSAL IN ABSENCE OF POLICIES AND TRAINING

MEDICAL RECORDS FOUND IN REGINA RECYCLING BIN

CBC.ca

March 23, 2011- The discovery of over 1,000 patient records in Regina, Saskatchewan has prompted a quick response from the province’s top privacy authority.

Gary Dickson, the province's information and privacy commissioner, told CBC News on Wednesday that he was surprised by what he found when he arrived at the site late in the day.

"To be honest, I'm astonished," Dickson said. "It appears to be a large volume of health information in file folders."

"What we know for sure is this is information that is not supposed to be found in a dumpster," he said. "This is totally inappropriate, to toss them in the dumpster where anyone could find them."

While the records have not been traced to one specific owner, at press time Dickson’s office was still working on retrieving all of the records. "I've got a colleague from my office who is still in the dumpster, trying to get to the bottom. We're still discovering more and more."

Johnson also announced that NAID will be providing official comment to HHS in support of the modifications, as well as creating a BA agreement to respond to the new requirement to use one with subcontractors.

DHHS to Put Emphasis on HIPAA Enforcement

At the Safeguarding Health Information conference in Washington, D.C. last month, Susan McAndrew, deputy director for privacy at the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights, said that the healthcare industry can soon expect a greater emphasis on enforcing the HIPAA security rule than in years past.

To reinforce her point, she stated that the Office for Civil Rights has added investigators in 10 regional offices specifically for the purpose of boosting enforcement.

Consequently, 2010 is when the industry will really start to see a realization of HITECH's privacy and security initiatives enacted in 2009. "We're hoping to move security to the forefront and make it a real partner with privacy in our enforcement," McAndrew says.
